Do you know that it is difficult to get your book on library shelves? Naively, I thought authors simply donated free copies and the librarian would happily display your book on their shelves. I didn’t think about the limited space, goals of the library, and the selection process. There certainly isn’t unlimited space on the shelves and there are many books to choose from!
What is Memphis Mosaic?
Memphis Mosaic is an anthology written by the Collierville Christian Writers group. Our theme was to write a fictional story based on a Memphis area landmark. This anthology includes 18 stories, covering various locations and time periods in Memphis’ history. I chose to write about the yellow fever epidemic through the voice of a white oak tree in Elmwood Cemetery.
How Did Memphis Mosaic Get on Library Shelves?
Last year, the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library hosted the third Richard Wright Literary Award ceremony. You can be nominated, or nominate yourself, for any of the categories that fit your writing. One category is a single work of an anthology. Many of us chose to submit our stories for consideration. Barbara Ragsdale’s story, “Not My Day,” won the award! Her story is about the Pink Palace, voting, and segregation in Memphis. It covers a lot of history and is a great story!
The Thrill of Seeing Memphis Mosaic on the Shelves
